The Vienna Wiesenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies (VWI) regularly conducts conferences and workshops. As a rule, the presenters are chosen following an open Call for Papers by a group of experts and in consultation with the International Academic Advisory Board of the institute. The annual fellowship application cycle of the VWI is similarly adjudicated.

All such calls – including others concerning research activities – are announced on this webpage.

Fellowships
Ukraine Emergency Call

from Friday, 5. May 2023 -  08:00
to Monday, 31. July 2023 - 23:59

In 2023, in light of the ongoing war in Ukraine, the City of Vienna again provides rapid and uncomplicated assistance to those Ukrainian researchers and historians who now find themselves war refugees.

The VWI is pleased to announce that it will take part and contribute to this important initiative. Having thankfully received €35,000 in funding, the VWI is now offering short-term emergency support fellowships ranging from one up to a maximum of four months aimed at PhD students as well as established scholars in the field(s) of Holocaust and Genocide Studies or Jewish Studies.

The goal of the Ukraine Emergency Call is to support Ukrainian scholars by enabling them to carry out a scientific project using the VWI’s resources in Vienna. Eligible candidates must currently be affiliated with a Ukrainian university and/or research institute or at least have received one or more of their academic credentials from such an institution. The fellowship recipients are expected to spend their fellowship on site at the VWI in Vienna.

The VWI will cover the cost of living for research stays up to a maximum of four months as well as the costs of a round-trip to and from Vienna (coach class airfare or 2nd class train fare). Expenses are covered following the regular VWI Fellowship Programmes. Other project-related expenses or overheads cannot be covered by the Ukraine Emergency Call. Fellowship recipients will be provided with an office space including internet access, an in-house research library as well as research opportunities with materials from the VWI’s archival collections.
