Das Wiener Wiesenthal Institut für Holocaust-Studien (VWI) ist Kooperationspartner des am 10. und 11. Mai 2015 im Misrachi Haus (Judenplatz 8, 1010 Wien) stattfindenden Symposiums 70 Jahre nach dem Ende der Shoah. „Chasara lachajim“ / Zurück zum Leben.

Siegi Mattl (1954 – 2015)

Das Wiener Wiesenthal Institut für Holocaust-Studien (VWI) trauert um Siegfried Mattl, den Leiter des Ludwig Boltzmann Instituts für Geschichte und Gesellschaft.

Er war als Mitglied der VWI-Arbeitsgruppe maßgeblich an der Konzeption des VWI beteiligt und begleitete auch die spätere Aufbauarbeit des Instituts immer mit Rat und Tat, seinen Ideen sowie seiner kenntnisreichen und kreativen Expertise. Er war ein langjähriger persönlicher Freund und ideengebender Mentor vieler Kolleginnen und Kollegen des VWI und blieb bis zuletzt dem VWI-Team, der ganzen Tätigkeit des Instituts zutiefst verbunden.

Er starb nach langer und geduldig, mit viel Humor, Optimismus und Hoffnung ertragener schwerer Krankheit 61-jährig am 25. April 2015. Die österreichische Forschungslandschaft, die Kulturwissenschaften verlieren mit ihm nicht nur einen einzigartigen Wissenschaftler und innovativen Vordenker, sondern auch einen großartigen Menschen. Er bleibt uns unvergesslich.

VWI-Fellow Tim Corbett Granted Prestigious Fellowship at The Center for Jewish History in New York City

Tim Corbett awarded the Prins Foundation Postdoctoral and Early Career Fellowship for Emigrating Scholars for the 
2015 – 2016 academic year.

NEW YORK – July 14, 2015 – Tim Corbett of the Vienna Wiesenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies has been named a 2015 – 2016 Prins Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for Jewish History – the home to the world’s largest and most comprehensive archive of the modern Jewish experience outside of Israel. Corbett will use his new position to conduct original research around the memory of Jewish-Austrian exiles and émigrés in the United States for a period of ten months.

Corbett’s doctoral dissertation at the UK's Lancaster University investigates Jewish-Austrian identity through the lens of military service, during the rise of political fascism, and in the wake of the Holocaust.

In Holocaust Studies, a new turn seems to advance: after the era of classical written source based historiography and 'the era of the witness' characterised by the paradigmatic role of survivor testimony in Holocaust research and remembrance, a forensic approach comes to the foreground nowadays. In recent years, the sites of the former concentration and extermination camps in Germany, Austria, Poland and beyond, as well as the mass graves at the 'killing sites' spread throughout Eastern Europe, have become the objects of archaeological research, contributing, in this way, to the development of a new subdiscipline, 'Holocaust archaeology.' This discipline becomes crucial where sources and witnesses are not available and enables confrontation of Holocaust deniers with facts. While acknowledging its unquestionable importance for fostering historical research on post-Holocaust landscapes, this workshop seeks to investigate the theoretical, methodological, political and practical implications of the 'forensic turn' for their investigation, memorialisation and experience.
