Refugee Voices

The Vienna Wiesenthal Institute (VWI) is the first institution in Austria to provide access to the interviews from the London-based Refugee Voices oral history project. The project was initiated in 2003 by the British Association of Jewish Refugees (AJR), a charity founded by Jewish refugees in 1941. Its aim was to provide social and financial support to Jewish refugees from the Nazi regime.

The team, led by Anthony Grenville and Bea Lewkowicz, has since produced more than 300 video interviews with Jewish émigrés living in the United Kingdom, former forced labourers and Holocaust survivors. Conducted in English and totalling over 600 hours, the AJR has prepared these interviews to make them accessible to researchers and the interested public. All interviews have been transcribed and provided with time codes, allowing users to easily locate specific sections of the videos. The extensive database includes an index of all the interviews, as well as additional biographical information about the interviewees. The videos can be searched online prior to a visit to the VWI by name and keywords. Two digital maps enable the targeted selection of interviews by place of birth and place of emigration.
