Hans Schafranek (1951–2022) was an Austrian contemporary historian and publicist whose research interests included National Socialism, the Gestapo, resistance, Stalinism, exile, comparative dictatorship studies and the Spanish Civil War.

During his lifetime, Schafranek arranged for his papers, comprising approximately 20 linear metres and relating to Austrian Nazi perpetrators (SS, the Austrian Legion/SA and trial records against Gestapo members), to be made available to the VWI as part of his estate.
