Cycle of VWI Fellows’ Colloquia
The VWI fellows present their intermediary research results in the context of colloquia which are announced to a small audience and are open to a public audience with an academic and topical interest. The lectures are complemented by a response or commentary by an expert in the given field and are discussed with the other fellows.
Due to the previous lack of an appropriate space, the colloquia were held at other Viennese research and cultural institutions with a topical or regional connection to the given subject. From this circumstance was born the “VWI goes to …” format.
With the move to a new institute building at Rabensteig 3, the spatial circumstances have changed, so that the VWI is now happily able to invite other research and cultural institutions. Therefore, the VWI is now conducting its colloquia both externally and within its own building, in the framework of continued co-operation with other institutions.
The new cycle of fellows’ colloquia “VWI invites/goes to …” is not only able to reach a broader circle of interested persons, but moreover integrates the VWI further into the Viennese scholarly establishment, perhaps even crossing borders into the greater regional research landscape.

VWI goes to DÖW Der Vortrag gibt einen Überblick über die Ermittlungen und Prozesse gegen NS-Täter in der Sowjetischen Besatzungszone und der DDR. Ähnlich wie in den Westzonen und der Bundesrepublik Deutschland begann die Ahndung der NS-Verbrechen vor den Gerichten schon im Jahr 1945. Kommentiert von Miloš Vec Edith Raim ist Senior Fellow des VWI. Sie studierte Geschichte und Germanistik in München und Princeton und arbeitete u.a. als DAAD-Lektorin in Großbritannien, am Haus der Geschichte in Bonn und am Münchner Institut für Zeitgeschichte. Edith Raim ist Lehrbeauftragte für Neuere und Neueste Geschichte in Augsburg und hat verschiedene Publikationen zur NS-Geschichte und zur Nachkriegszeit vorgelegt. Jüngste Publikation: Nazi Crimes Against Jews and German Post-War Justice. The West German Judicial System During Allied Occupation (1945–1949), Berlin 2014. Miloš Vec ist Professor für Europäische Rechts- und Verfassungsgeschichte an der Universität Wien und seit 2016 Permanent Fellow am Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen (IWM). Anders als in der Bundesrepublik verebbte allerdings die Tätigkeit der Gerichte in den 1950er-Jahren fast vollständig, spätere Verfahren waren stets ein Reflex auf die in Westdeutschland stattfindenden Prozesse mit dem Anspruch, die Verfolgung der NS-Verbrechen im anderen Deutschland besser und gründlicher zu betreiben. Neben einer quantitativen Auswertung erfolgt auch eine qualitative Analyse der etwa 15.000 Verfahren gegen mehr als 22.000 Beschuldigte und Angeklagte.
